ABBY HAD JUST finished taking a shower and changing clothes, when she got a call from Scott, who wanted a video chat. Fresh thoughts of their night of passion rolled through her mind, and what it might portend for the future, before she accepted the request. His handsome face appeared on the screen. “Hey.” She kept her tone neutral, though admittedly having butterflies in their first communication since she’d driven away from his ranch a few hours ago.

“Hi. I see you made it back.”

“Of course.” She looked at him, trying to read his eyes. “Did you think I wouldn’t?”

“Just glad to see that you did.” He paused thoughtfully. “After you left, I got a weird text message.”

“How weird?”

“Someone warned me to stop the investigation into your aunt’s murder...” Scott began, “or put your life at risk.”

“Seriously?” Abby’s eyes widened with shock. “I’m being threatened now?”

“I’m afraid so.” Scott’s brow creased. “Looks as if the unsub believes it’s only a matter of time now before the cloak of hiding in plain view for years comes crashing down. The killer is sending a clear message that threatening to come after you unless I back off will somehow do the trick.”

“I’d never want you to give up finding my aunt Veronica’s killer—” Abby made it clear “—by allowing our personal relationship to interfere with your job as a cold case investigator.” She would never put such pressure on him in what would be a major conflict of interest. No matter the strength of her feelings for him. Or vice versa.

“I know.” Scott seemed to read her mind. “I feel the same way. Giving in to intimidation would be a big mistake,” he stressed.

“I agree.”

“Could be the unsub is just bluffing. Or not. Either way, you need to watch your back, Abby.”

“I will,” she promised, and thought about carrying pepper spray and being aware of her surroundings.

“I’ll try to see if I can track down the sender of the text message,” Scott said and took a breath. “In the meantime, I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to you.”

“Neither would I.” Abby felt the strong vibes between them. The last thing she could imagine was having her life cut short like her aunt’s and, in the process, ending whatever she seemed to be building with Scott. A thought suddenly occurred to Abby that seemed worth mentioning. “This may or may not mean anything, but a couple of days ago when I was at the hospital for work, I thought I saw Zach Gilliard at the end of the corridor. Only, when I tried to verify this, he was gone. Then when driving to see you yesterday, I thought an SUV was following me.”

Scott’s brows knitted. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because when the SUV continued on after I exited the highway, I figured it was all in my head,” she asserted. “Not worth bringing up. Probably still was nothing. Or maybe Zach is stalking me but trying to do so at a safe distance.
